I ordered this for my grandson and had it delivered directly to him. Content is great but the book is assembled backwards! When looking at the cover right side up, the pages inside are upside down.....????
It's not a perfect book, but it is perfect for my 6 year old. Each page is chock full of colors, drawings, pictures, and facts. Though it is labeled a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) book, this edition only focuses on Science, and not really the other categories. This is fine because it would be overwhelming, I think, and too shallow if it tried to cover too much. The books starts with descriptions of the Universe, the Moon, the Sun, the Earth, and moves on to Weather, Animals, Plants, and the body. The book also makes a point to cover Evolution and Climate Change, among with some more random topics like Friction, Bridge Building, and the Internet. What I find the book does best with, however, is acting as a springboard for further discussion. I see a parent reading the book with a child and then stopping to ask questions, or to fill in the gaps in each topic, and relating why it is important. When done this way the book is a much more effective teaching tool than just reading it straight through.Recommended.
There is so much information inside this book. The illustrations are fantastic, realistic and overall pleasing to look at. Even as an adult there is information that I find I am re-learning from looking through. It is the most interesting to my 5 & 7 year olds, but the youngers are still enjoying it. I appreciate that the pages are not over-loaded with details, but give enough that we actually read all of the words without skipping concepts. The book pages are divided by one topic per 2 page spread. Some of the topics covered are: The Sun, The Earth, The Moon, The Weather, Animals, The Arctic Food Web, Ecosystems, Simple Machines, Building Bridges, Materials, Friction, Electricity and many, many more.
The STEAM book is fun and informative. Each two pages covers a different topic. The pictures are colorful so they draw the kids attention right in. There are five characters that represent each of the STEAM subjects that show up in each page. Then it has small blurbs of information on the pages topic. So it gives the kids useful information without it being fact overload and boring. Since it’s not really a story that you can just sit there and read over and over, we use it more as a reference book. Which seems to happen pretty often. The human body was useful when my child asked about babies being in bellies. The time zone pages came in handy when we discussed their grandparents vacation to the other side of the country. Same with boat pages when explaining that boats can sink. We were reading another book where the boat was sinking and my child asked how a boat can sink when they float. So it really has been a useful book to answer my kids questions in a thoughtful way.
The STEAM Team reminds me of a slightly friendlier version of the encyclopedias and reference books we had when I was growing up. It's good to see there's still a need for this type of book. DK has, as usual done an exceptional job of breaking information into manageable bites and brilliantly illustrating concepts. I would guess that children in second through fourth grade would be the perfect age for this book although older children will still appreciate it. (As well as some of us adults who are not very clear on science concepts.) Each two page spread of the book covers a single concept - weather, planets, simple machines, etc. The book is arranged so that there is a clear flow from one idea to the next. For example, the ideas go from "the universe" to "the solar system" to "our super sun" and so on.A glossary and an index are included. The illustrations are colorful and inviting for younger readers. This book would make a great gift for a budding scientist or a handy reference for an elementary classroom.
This book is great in a way, yet I have some reservations about its slightly scatterbrained artwork and style. Each spread of pages seems like a shotgun blast of little facts presented by these silly beaker/gear/pencil characters. It's great if a parent is reading this book with the child, and that parent knows enough about enough things to clarify or explain more about each point made, and to answer questions that come up. Then the book serves as sort of an outline or reminder list for the parent. Each time you go through the book you can concentrate and expand on a different set of points, so the book has continuing interest and value.
This is a colorful and inviting book. It is a large hard bound book with thick, matte pages and a nice big table of contents. Each page covers different subject matter like space, machines, materials, time, weather and the human body. There are a number of interesting facts presented in little conversation bubbles in smaller print, and bold headers and and sidebars make it more stimulating and easy to read. What I like most in terms of how they presented the material is the use of real pictures mixed in with illustrations, and lots of use of the negative space with big, high definition background pictures. It is a great reference for kids getting into science and I personally like to read it as well!
This is a profusely illustrated book that defines many, many terms used in science. It will be appreciated by home schoolers and also by children who want to expand their knowledge of science. If they are interested in a particular field, they may want to concentrate on that topic rather than reading the whole book. It doesn't flow like a narrative so you can jump around without losing track.A heads-up to people who are still ostrich-like about climate change: This treats it as a real thing, as the vast majority of scientists do. So if you want to protect your children from the "inconvenient truth," you may not want to get this.Elementary school students with a curiosity about the world will probably benefit from perusing this book.
